Date: December, 2017 Position Title: Associate Veterinarian Position Summary: LaSalle Equine Clinic and Livestock Services is seeking a full time associate to join our large animal practice in northwest Montana. Our case load is 90% equine/10% livestock. 50% of our work is ambulatory and 50% in our well equipped hospital. The practice serves as an intermediate referral hospital for the community but is so far enough from true referral centers that we frequently care for some very interesting and challenging surgical and medical cases. Candidates must embrace general practice particularly dentistry which is a core service for the practice. We care for western performance horses, jumpers, dressage, three day event horses and large herds of outfitter animals, but in many ways a large portion of our practice is more like a companion animal practice in terms of how clients care for and feel about their horses. In these situations we deal with the horse owner, a person that often has limited experience in horse management and care of the sick or injured horse in particular. Providing owner education with patience and understanding is an important function of practice in this community. The practice was once a cattle practice and although most of the cattle are gone from the area we still see both beef and dairy cattle, along with sheep and goats.
One of the joys and benefits of group practice is to know all clients of the practice will be well served by whoever is on call so that we can all enjoy our time off. Clients in this practice are clients of the practice and not individual veterinarians. In a small practice like LaSalle every veterinarian is a generalist and must be comfortable and competent to address routine cases in all areas of service. One of the greatest strengths of the practice has been and continues to be dentistry. Dentistry is not only the largest service profit center for the practice; it is the service that provides the opportunity for our veterinarians to see and touch horses on a regular basis and in doing so recognize other opportunities to improve the health and welfare of the horse. The ideal candidate for this position would be a true generalist with personal interests in reproduction, dentistry, cattle and small ruminant medicine.
