The City features an Olympic style indoor swimming pool, new public library, and a well-supported civic arts program and senior center. Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center provides full medical services for island residents, with several eye care and dental providers on island as well. There are 5 native villages located around the island accessible only by boat or plane, along with the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge that takes up almost 2/3's of the islands land mass. Kodiak is home to the world famous Kodiak Brown Bear, boasting a population of over 3,000 bears (or almost 1 for every square mile of island!). Wildlife abounds with bears, bald eagles, fox, black tail deer, a multitude of other birds, whales, dolphins, and more! For entertainment opportunities, there is a movie theater, auditorium for concerts and plays, many delicious restaurants, and even a 9-hole golf course.
