Main Purpose of Job As Field Veterinarian for the Eastern Shore and Southern Maryland, the incumbent serves primarily to prevent introduction of infectious diseases among Maryland's agricultural poultry and livestock by enforcing animal health regulation, providing diagnostic and investigative services and by educating animal producers, exhibitor, and veterinarians on disease control. Conducts animal health operations in the region across the spectrum from routine to emergency. Represents the Agency to local, other Maryland and Out of State agencies in matters pertaining to poultry and animal health. This position provides critical support to the Agency's mission of protecting animal and public health, promoting agriculture, ensuring consumer confidence, and protecting the environment.
POSITION DUTIES This position is lead for field, regulatory, and emergency readiness and response. Two primary duties include administration of the Poultry and Swine programs. Poultry Program duties, including oversight of the National Poultry Improvement Program (NPIP) and management of the federal -state Cooperative Agreement for Notifiable Avian Influenza. Manages poultry related cooperative agreements or other statewide programs pertaining to poultry health. Swine Program duties include the implementation of federal and state regulations, importation and disease management. Sets Animal Health policies, practices, and inspections to maintain Maryland's pseudorabies, brucellosis free status. Advises Animal Health Chief and Assistant Chiefs on the surveillance status of garbage feeding, emerging swine disease ant other Swine Influenza-like illnesses.
